Gloucestershire Care Provider Launches Free VR Sessions to Bring Joy to Older Adults

Ellia, a Gloucestershire-based home help and companionship service, has launched Ellia Mind Journeys, offering free virtual reality sessions to local community groups and senior organisations across the county.

Ellia was started because of a gap that anyone who has looked for support for a family member will recognise. Most care provision kicks in at the point of crisis. Before that, people are largely on their own, and many resist asking for help because they do not see themselves as someone who needs "a carer." Ellia exists for exactly that space.

Mind Journeys comes from the same thinking. Getting older or living with a disability should not mean a life that gets smaller. During the one-hour sessions, participants remain seated while wearing lightweight headsets that take them to global landmarks, peaceful landscapes, live concerts and familiar British locations. Thomas, Ellia's founder, runs every session alongside two community coordinators, bringing all the equipment and guiding participants through it at their own pace.

"So much of care is focused on getting through the day," says Thomas. "We want people to have new experiences and something to look forward to. The reactions when people put the headsets on make it worth every minute."

Sessions are completely free, with no equipment or travel costs to community groups.
